Target situation analysis

In this case, I have 5 (five) students. Before I start the teaching-learning process, I have to analyze the students first. The analysis is conducted to get information about the target situation of the students. We can, therefore, know the students’ aim for taking the ESP course. And, as a teacher I will know what I should do in the teaching-learning process.

1. Student of nurse academy

a) Why is the language needed?
The language is needed for study. She though her English ability is not really good, so that she decides to take this course. This course is expected can give her another source of English as a language and English as knowledge. She also takes this course in order to increase her ability in advance English and in knowing new medical terms.

b) How will the language be used?
The language will be used by her in writing and speaking. She expects to be able to use English in both writing and speaking, because learning methodology applied in her collage use these. She will use the language also in inferring some medical books.
c) What will the content areas be?
She wants to learn English in advance level, because she is a student of college. Besides that, she is actually able to speak English but still not dare. She, therefore, wants to learn English in speaking process and in writing process.

d) Who will the learner use the language with?
She will use the language with her English lecturer and also with some of her friends. She actually still feels that her English is not good enough for student of college level, so that she takes this course. She hopes next her English improved.

e) Where will the language be used?
The language will be used during lecture and sometimes also beyond the lecture with her friends informally. In the classroom she will use the language with her English lecture formally, but not too formal actually. She also hopes the language can be used when she has worked.

f) When will the language be used?
The language will be used in the classroom during the lecture. She hopes after taking this course, she can communicate in English smoothly. Not only during the lecture, the language will also be used when she meets her friends from English Department.

2. Student of medical faculty of Unila

a) Why is the language needed?
The student needs the language for both study and work. English that he get from the course during his study will be used to make easy him in understanding medical material, because most of the materials used in medical faculty are English. Besides that, almost all of the terms used in the materials are in English. So that, from this course, he expects he can understand many new vocabularies related to medical terms.

b) How will the language be used?
Language learned in this course will be used in several mediums. They are speaking, writing, and reading. But, the most skill expected to be mastered is speaking. Speaking skill will be used in the classroom with some lecturers spoke in English. Writing skill is used to make easy in making prescription in the work world, and to make easy in doing English assignment during his study. Reading skill is, of course, used in understanding the materials used English.

c) What will the content areas be?
Subject that he wants to master is English related to medicine and biology. He wants to master these two subjects, because these two subjects are related to his study program. Level of subject that he wants to master is student of university level, because it can make him easy to follow the course.

d) Who will the learner use the language with?
The learner will use the language with both native and non-native speaker. He will use the language with some of his lecturers that are not only native speakers, but also experts. He also will use the language with some of his friends in an informal conversation. He also hopes he can use the language someday in the future, when he works.

e) Where will the language be used?
The language will be used in the classroom. During his study in Unila, he wants to use the language with his lectures. Besides that, he wants also to use the language beyond the classroom with his friends.

f) When will the language be used?
He will use the language during his lecture. The use of language in the lecture will occur frequently. But, the use of English beyond the classroom will be in small amount only.

3. The third grade student of senior high school

a) Why is the language needed?
The language is needed for study. He is a student of international school, but he thinks his English is still poor. So that, he takes this course in order to make his study easy. He has to communicate in English with his teachers and friends. Therefore, he should learn about English.

b) How will the language be used?
The language will be used actually in many mediums, but he insists in speaking skill, because speaking is the bridge for him to gain the knowledge from his school. The language in thus context will be used face-to-face. The communication happened there is all in English. So that, speaking is insisted here.

c) What will the content areas be?
The content areas will be about speaking techniques. Because speaking insisted, the subject given should be about speaking. The level of subject that is given should be advance level, because the learner is a student of the third grade of international senior high school.

d) Who will the learner use the language with?
He will use the language with his teacher and friends. Almost all of his teachers are the expert and native, but some of them are post graduate student that work as a teacher. Some of his friends are native speakers, but the rest are non-native.

e) Where will the language be used?
The language will be used in the school. In both during study and communicate with his friends he should always speak in English.

f) When will the language be used?
He will use the language when he communicates with his teacher during study process happened and with his friends during study process happened as well. Actually, the English communication not only happened during teaching-learning process, but it is also happened beyond teaching-learning process, because he studies in an international senior high school.

4. The student of environmental healthy academy

a) Why is the language needed?
The language is needed for study. He is a student of environmental healthy academy, but he think his English is still poor. So that, he takes this course in order to make his study easier. He has to communicate in English with some of his lecturers and friends in an English lecture. Therefore, he should learn about English.

b) How will the language be used?
He will use the English in speaking and writing mediums. The language will be used during the lectures process, so he needs speaking skill very much. And there are many assignments that use English, so that he needs English writing skill as well, because he will write many academic writings.

c) What will the content areas be?
She wants to learn English in advance level, because she is a student of college. Besides that, she is actually able to speak English but still not dare. She, therefore, wants to learn English in speaking process and in writing process.

d) Who will the learner use the language with?
She will use the language with her English lecturer and also with some of her friends. She actually still feels that her English is not good enough for student of college level, so that she takes this course. She hopes next her English improved.

She will use the language in the classroom during English lectures process. She hopes by doing this course she can speaks to her English lecturer and her friends smoothly. She will also use the language in doing her homework. She knows that her homework must have many medical English terms.

He will use the language during his lecture. The use of language in the lecture will occur frequently. Besides that, the English will also be used, but the use of English beyond the classroom will be in small amount only.

5. Student of medical faculty of Malahayati University

a) Why is the language needed?
The learner need the language focused for study. She knows that her field is medical field. Therefore, she also knows that she have many problems with many medical terms. She hopes she can learn many new medical vocabularies in this course.

b) How will the language be used?
She will use the English in speaking and writing mediums. The language will be used during the lectures process, so she needs speaking skill very much. And there are many assignments that use English, so that she needs English writing skill as well, because she will write many academic writings.

c) What will the content areas be?
The language will be used in speaking and writing skill, so that she needs to learn speaking in both theory and practice. The speaking level used by the learner should be advance, because she is a student of collage. She needs to learn writing in both theory and practice as well speaking. And the level that has to be applied is advance as well.

d) Who will the learner use the language with?
She will use the language with her English lecturers and she will also use the language in doing her assignments. The level of knowledge of her lecturers is of course expert.

e) Where will the language be used?
She will use the language in the classroom during English lectures process. She hopes by doing this course she can speaks to her English lecturer and her friends smoothly. She will also use the language in doing her homework. She knows that her homework must have many medical English terms.

f) When will the language be used?
The language will be applied when she gets an English lecture. She will also use the language beyond the lecture with some of her friends who like to speak English.
